From Expertise to Authority: Building Your Professional Presence for a Sideline or Second Act

Check out my Substack, starting with my article on How Real-World Needs Shaped a Universal Framework.

Overview

Whether you're exploring a sideline venture, planning a second act of your career, or simply looking for new ways to share your hard-earned knowledge, today's professional landscape offers more opportunities than ever before. Through this workshop as well as through personalized consulting, I help you build your professional presence through three progressive stages—one that supports influence, income, and long-term relevance.

Description

Professionals often reach a point where they want to do more with what they know—extend their reach beyond the boundaries of their current job, reconnect with their field after a transition, or lay the groundwork for new forms of income. But with so many options available, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

In From Expertise to Authority, Matty Dalrymple guides participants through a practical framework for building professional presence through three progressive stages of relationship-building. Drawing on her background in the corporate world (Siemens Health Services, QVC), her Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics from UPenn, her experience as Principal of William Kingsfield Publishers, and her work as an author, consultant, and host of The Indy Author Podcast, Matty demystifies the journey from expertise to authority.

The Three Stages to Building Your Presence

Building Expertise-Based Relationships - Share your knowledge - Written content (self-published articles, contributor articles, books) establishes your credibility and creates the foundation for everything that follows. This stage is ideal for those focused on staying connected and relevant or paying it forward through writing.

Building Personality-Based Relationships - Share your voice - Conversational content (podcast guesting, podcast hosting, interviews) adds personality to your expertise, creating deeper human connections. This stage is perfect for those who want to build community and expand their influence through personal connection.

Building Authority-Based Relationships - Share your mastery - Direct engagement (speaking and consulting) positions you as an authority, providing high-visibility (speaking) or high-touch (consulting) opportunities to generate significant income and lasting impact.

The Framework

The path to building your professional presence starts with four essential questions:

What expertise do you want to share? Identify the knowledge and experience you've built throughout your career that could serve others.

What are your objectives? Whether your goals include income generation, staying connected and relevant in your field, expanding your influence, or paying it forward to the next generation, clarity about your objectives shapes everything that follows.

Where are you starting? Understanding your current platform—whether you have no presence yet, are already creating content, or are actively engaged in speaking or consulting—helps determine your starting point.

How far do you want to go? Your objectives determine whether you'll progress through one, two, or all three stages of building professional presence.

What You'll Learn

Through examples, strategic worksheets, and actionable guidance, attendees will learn:

  • How to identify the value you want to bring and the objectives that will guide your path

  • How each stage works, what it requires, and what you can realistically expect

  • Natural progressions from one stage to the next—how written content becomes the basis for conversations, and how personality-based connections lead to authority positioning

  • How to take manageable, strategic next steps no matter where you are in your career

  • The key to sustainable growth: building credibility at each stage while repurposing content to maximize reach and minimize effort
